external control in Vista

Unread postby instinktfussballer » Thu Jul 30, 2009 8:48 pm

hi,
i´m interested in using your stopwatch program by external control.
its working on one computer with windows xp and an usb to serial adapter. but on my vista computer using the same adapter there is an error. it says: "can´t open the port COM12"
but in my computer settings the serial adapter has com12 and it´s working properly.
do you know that problem?
thanks for your help.
sorry for that "german english" :)

Perhaps some software or service has already owned the port. Try to open with communication program.

Com port assignments

Unread postby Goertz Acre Coffee Roasters » Tue Dec 01, 2009 10:29 pm

Is it possible to assign external control to a Com port greater than 9 (COM10 or greater)?

I have 15 Com ports on my system and only 1 thruogh 9 are assignable.

Thanks.

There should not be problems. What OS?

The OS is Windows XP Home Service Pack 3.

I will continue testing at my end to see if there is an inconsistancy in my system.

Thanks!

Re: usb to serial adapters.....

Hi - Windows 7, Prolific USB to serial adapter shows up as com port 13. External controls window shows com port 13 selected (only option available in ports). Start/Stop option set to pins 7-8 RTS-CTS. When I click the enable check box and click ok, an error dialogue box pops up and says "Can't open port COM13". Windows sees the com port OK. I tried this same usb/serial adapter and XNote on a laptop running Windows XP. The Prolific usb/serial adapter shows up as com4. That works...

Is there a problem with XNote using com13?

Thanks!

It seems XNote is unable to open COM greater than 9. I will investigate. As a possible workaround rename COMxx to COMx.

Could you let me know too? I paid before i tried and my Windows 7 set my USB/Serial converter to COMM15. I tried other ports but to no avail. Still great product, just needs a tweek here...

USB to Serial Re: Com port assignments

Hi, seems that the problem is the USB to Serial adapter.

I have been trying with every port and every other combination to try to make it work on a new laptop with only usb ports and xp OS but failed.

I had to take a very old laptop with 150MHZ to be happy. :)

Has anyone succesful tested an USB to Serial adapter to make the externa control work? Will be pleased to know.

Another solution might be a PCMCIA card with serial com port
